DISCOVER A HIDDEN HIDEAWAY IN TEITA HILLS: THE HILDANA LODGE

These days everyone is on the lookout for a little-known getaway in an off-the-beaten-path location where they can have an amazing experience. The Hildana Lodge is an exclusive property on a 5,000-acre sanctuary in the Teita Hills.

The Hildana Lodge

This family-owned lodge lies adjacent to one of the largest sisal plantations in the World. It is in a private conservancy, providing the freedom to enjoy game viewing away from the usual safari circuit crowds.

An elephant lovers delight

The Hildana Lodge lies in the heart of the Tsavo elephant corridor which links Lake Jipe in Tsavo West with the Galana River in Tsavo East. That said, elephants are the highlight of a stay at Hildana making it perfect for those with a passion for these gentle giants. The sanctuary is also home to less commonly seen wildlife such as endangered cheetahs and African wild dogs and many other species.

The lodge has an amazing viewpoint overlooking an active waterhole which is lit up with a floodlight. This attracts a steady stream of wildlife to slake their thirst offering exceptional game viewing where you are the only ones to enjoy the spectacle.

Welcoming luxury accommodation

The Hildana Lodge sleeps just 20 people in five stand-alone cottages ensuring you have privacy surrounded by the peace of the African bush. Each room has been decorated in Mediterranean luxe with a coastal Swahili twist. In keeping with safari style, the rooms are all open-fronted giving sweeping views of the hills around you. This open concept also provides a cool respite during the heat of the day. The Hildana Lodge caters to families with two family units consisting of a double and twin room connected by a shared living space. It also has a superlative honeymoon suite which has stunning views and a private enclosed garden area.

As a family-run property, there is a welcoming atmosphere that caters to the individual while also creating a friendly atmosphere. The farm-to-fork policy means that all meals are freshly prepared using organic produce from the estate. Meals are served family style around the dining table or al fresco to take in the views of the African bush or under the stars. This creates a home away from home atmosphere.

Those looking for a homely luxury lodge experience with a range of alternate activities within easy access of Tsavo and the Teita Conservancy can do no better than the Hildana Lodge. Consider staying here during your next trip to Kenya with Adventure Expeditions!

Day trips to Tsavo

When staying at the Hildana Lodge you can also access Tsavo East and Tsavo West to enjoy day trips to explore the abundant wildlife and geological attractions of one of the largest conservation areas in Kenya. In Tsavo West, you will find evidence of the geological past of the area, from the impressive Shetani Lava Flow and Caves to the oasis of the Mzima Springs.

A highlight of Tsavo East is the Galana River and the Kanderi Swamps which are crucial water sources in the dry season and attract vast herds of antelope and the ever-present predators.

The need for speed

However, it's not just wildlife on offer! In recent years the safari rally has been revived in Kenya. When staying at Hildana Lodge, petrolheads can indulge in their wild side by taking out one of the rally cars and testing their mettle on the safari rally track on the property. The track forms a key part of the East African rally circuit and you may be lucky enough to catch one of the stages while you are there.

Learn about Sisal - a sustainable alternative

For those who would rather take a gentler approach to their vacation, enjoy a guided tour of the sisal estate and learn about the production of this sustainable product. Sisal has many uses in industry, such as rope, footwear, and clothing, and can be used to make the alcoholic tipple mezcal. As more people look into a more sustainable lifestyle, more and more products are being made from this environmentally sustainable fiber and production is on the rise. Wastewater from the farm and processing factory is used in aquaculture and hydroponic farming schemes on the estate. Organic fruits and vegetables from the estate feature in the lovingly prepared Mediterranean-inspired meals that are served at the Hildana Lodge.
